Dear Southside family and friends,

After nine long weeks of not being able to worship together we are happy to announce we will resume in person worship services this coming Sunday May 24 at 10:30.

We pray you are all doing well and hope you have been able to worship with us in our on-line worship services during the restrictions put in place due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, since Virginia is now in Phase One of the plan to ease restrictions, we can resume in person worship services with several changes as to how we use the church building in place to meet state guidelines.

We will still live stream the worship service to Facebook, and post later to YouTube, for those for are not able to attend in person or are uncomfortable in doing so.

It is recommended that anyone in a high-risk group, or who is displaying symptoms of the virus, or has a temperature more than one degree above their normal temperature remain at home and participate online.

High-risk Group

Based on what we know now, those at high-risk for severe illness from COVID-19 are:

  • People 65 years and older
  • People who live in a nursing home or long-term care facility

People of all ages with underlying medical conditions, particularly if not well controlled, including:

  • People with chronic lung disease or moderate to severe asthma
  • People who have serious heart conditions
  • People who are immunocompromised

Many conditions can cause a person to be immunocompromised, including cancer treatment, smoking, bone marrow or organ transplantation, immune deficiencies, poorly controlled HIV or AIDS, and prolonged use of corticosteroids and other immune weakening medications

  • People with severe obesity (body mass index [BMI] of 40 or higher)
  • People with diabetes
  • People with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis
  • People with liver disease

COVID-19 Symptoms

People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness.

Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Sore throat
  • New loss of taste or smell

This list is not all possible symptoms. Other less common symptoms have been reported, including gastrointestinal symptoms

Building and Assembly changes

While we can now meet in person at 50% capacity of the church building, the following changes are in place to follow social distancing recommendations and state guidelines:

  • No Bible classes.  Only the 10:30 worship service.  This will avoid close contact in classrooms and hallways.
  • All classrooms and playground will be off limits
  • Use the front door to the auditorium to enter and exit for the English service
  • Use the side door (parking lot) to the fellowship hall for the Spanish service
  • Use of face coverings over the nose and mouth is recommended
  • Use hand sanitizer when entering building
  • Pickup individual serving communion cups as you enter
  • Offering basket will be at back of the auditorium instead of being passed
  • Every other pew will be blocked off to help maintain six-foot social distancing recommendations
  • Please bring your own Bibles to use as pew Bibles and Songbooks will be removed
  • No food fellowships

If you are not able to attend in person you can make your normal offering by mailing it to the church building or making your contribution online.  Details are on the church website at cocsouthside.org.

Also, we do offer an online interactive Bible Study, using the Zoom meeting software, on Wednesday nights at 7:00.  If you would like to be a part of that study, just send an e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots.
