Four Words that Describe Both Baseball and Salvation
Church members - Good morning! I am so happy to see you here today. Thank you for coming and worshipping God today!
Online viewers - Good morning to you if you are watching online. Thank you for linking in to our worship today.
Visitors - Good morning to our visitors. My name is Tom Davis, and I am the preacher at Southside church of Christ. At Southside we love to gather to worship God, to study and learn God’s word, to bring salvation to those outside of Christ, and to volunteer in areas of service.
INTRODUCTION
We are continuing our theme of Homerun Weekend. Last night we met at the park and watched the Winchester Royals play baseball.
This morning we are continuing that theme with our baseball attire and a sermon themed around the subject of baseball.
Let’s begin with a little baseball history
The American Legend of Baseball claims it began around the mid-1800’s, started by a man named Abner Doubleday in Cooperstown New York.
However, American baseball historians say it evolved from an older bat-and-ball game already being played in England in the mid-1700’s. Historians believe the game was brought by immigrants to North America, where eventually the modern version developed.
The first official game of baseball took place in 1846 in Hoboken, New Jersey but the very first professional baseball game was played on May 4, 1869 in Cincinnati. The team was called the Red Stockings.
By the late 1800’s, baseball was widely recognized as the national sport of the United States.
The singing of the National Anthem was added to the game during the Cubs-Red Sox World Series in 1918, when the United States was in the 2nd year of World War I.
A live military band performed the song during the seventh-inning stretch at Chicago’s Comiskey Park. As the band played the audience began to sing the words and more and more voices joined in and the final words, “the home of the brave” were followed by thunderous applause
The Church Family
God never called us to travel life alone. From the beginning, He saw that "it is not good for man to be alone" (Genesis 2:18). Being connected to one another allows us to "teach one another" (Colossians 3:16), "serve one another" (Galations 5:13), "encourage one another" (Hebrews 10:25), and most importantly, "pray for each other" (James 5:16)
"For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body - Jews or Greeks, slaves or free - and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many." (1 Corinthians 12:12-14)
